As a creative director currently based in the United Kingdom, Steve has built his career specialising in Olympic ceremonies and large-scale events that meld mass spectacle and volunteer mass casts. He has contributed—in a spectrum of roles—to 17 consecutive Summer and Winter Olympics spanning Barcelona ’92 to Paris 2024. Currently Steve is continuing his role as advisor to the International Olympic Committee for the next Olympic Games in Milano/Cortina 2026 and Los Angleles 2028.
Steve held two positions in Rio 2016; Opening Ceremony Director of Mass Choreography & Protocol and IOC Protocol Consultant for Victory Ceremonies. For the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, his scope of responsibility as Head of Mass Movement Choreography included: working with three creative teams to deliver the artistic vision for mass cast scenes in four ceremonies; developing the logistics and staging for four Parade of Athletes; live-action direction and troubleshooting from the control room during each show; designing the audition curriculum and leading the instruction of 16,000 volunteer performers; leading the team of 29 mass movement choreographers deployed between three rehearsal venues; building and editing the technical scripts for the production.
Other career defining projects Steve has contributed to include: “Kynren: An Epic Tale of England” in County Durham; the 2015 Dubai World Cup; the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games; the 40th Oman National Day Celebration featuring 12,000 school children; Glasgow Flag Handover for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games; the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai; the 15th Asian Games in Doha; the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games; the Athens 2004 Olympic Games; the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in Cape Town; the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester; the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics; the Beyoncé and Paul McCartney Super Bowl Halftime Shows; Talent Wrangler on several Oscar, Emmy and Grammy Award broadcasts; and designer for Peter Minshall's Callaloo Company for Carnival in Trinidad.
Steve's publication design career in New York City (1988 to 2000) included serving as Corporate Art Director for Condé Nast Publications where he oversaw projects promoting a roster of 17 magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, Wired, and Condé Nast Traveler. He has held the positions of Promotion Art Director for Mirabella and Managing Promotion Art Director for The New Yorker.
